What Is Liposuction?

Liposuction helps patients with stubborn fat pockets slim down their appearance and reshape the body for better proportions and contours. Liposuction can treat many body areas where fat pockets deposit, and can be combined with other procedures such as a breast reduction, to slim the body down and create more toned features. Those with are considered overweight or have a normal body mass index; liposuction can improve more than just the waistline, including:

Reducing The Risk Of Heart Disease

Studies have shown that patients who had liposuction had a reduction in their white blood cell count, which is commonly associated with obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and a higher risk of heart attacks. This lowering in triglycerides can aid in making a person heart-healthy.

Lower Blood Pressure

Patients at risk for developing diabetes can lower blood pressure, thus reducing insulin resistance and helping patients in their earliest stages of diabetes, as indicated by studies by the National Institutes of Health.

While many of these benefits can occur, liposuction isn’t a cure for obesity, nor does it improve health beyond its purpose of removing fat. Diet and exercise are the recommended choices for those with obesity, as it can have metabolic benefits that dramatically reduce health risks over time.

How Liposuction Works

During your time in Dr. Pinsky’s office, you’ll be assessed during your consultation for your qualifications, the costs, recovery instructions, and any risks. Once Dr. Pinsky has discussed the procedure and has determined that you qualify, he will schedule an appointment for your surgery and is the procedure with the following:

  1. Dr. Pinsky will administer medication, such as general anesthesia, local anesthesia, or intravenous sedation, for your comfort.
  2. Dr. Pinsky will begin the procedure using small incisions, implementing local anesthesia to reduce bleeding and trauma. After inserting a cannula tube, the tube will loosen the excess fat through back and forth motions to dislodge it. Once dislodged, the fat will be suctioned out using a surgical vacuum or a syringe attached to the cannula.
  3. After closing the incisions with sutures, adhesives, and tapes, he will prescribe medications to be taken orally or topically to reduce the risk of infection. He will inform you of your recovery instructions.

Liposuction Risk And Recovery

During your recovery, bandages will control swelling and compress the skin to the new body contours. Drains may be needed to remove any excess fluid buildup, and the process of recovery will take about two weeks or more depending on additional procedures. Patients can expect some bruising and swelling to occur, and compression garments will be needed to help the healing process. All risks associated with liposuction will be discussed with you during your appointment.
